Issaquah Schools Foundation

Issaquah Schools FoundationThe Issaquah Schools Foundation is a community-supported non-profit organization that raises funds to bridge the gap between the dollars the state provides for basic education and the money our schools need to give our students a comprehensive 21st Century education. With parent and community support, the Foundation is able to fund programs and investments that advance academic achievement, support struggling students, and promote professional development.

Community Conversations
The next entry in the ISF/IEA/PTSA/ISD sponsored Community Conversations film series—‘Race to Nowhere’—will be shown on Thursday, March 1, at 7:00 pm at the Issaquah High School Performing Arts Center.
This critically acclaimed documentary is a must see for parents and students. Filmmaker and mother Vicki Abeles turns her lens on the culture of hollow achievement and pressure to perform that has invaded America’s schools and explores the price our kids pay for this ‘race to nowhere.' Attendees will have the opportunity to share their reactions to the film during a post-screening panel discussion featuring District parents, students and personnel. Tickets to ‘Race to Nowhere’ are $10 in advance and $15 at the door and can be purchased online. Space is limited. Click Here to see a theatrical trailer.

Nourish Every Mind Luncheon
Think Spring! Celebrate spring at the Nourish Every Mind Luncheon! This year’s event will be held on Thursday, May 10 from 11:00 am – 1:00 pm at the Issaquah Community Center. If you’ve attended before you know the Luncheon is the place to be to network, catch up with friends and hear first-hand how donor funded ISF programs are changing the lives of Issaquah School District students. If you haven’t attended in the past, add it to your ‘to–do’ list. Save-the-Date cards will be mailed soon. In the meantime, you may call or email Michelle Weldon, to add your name to the invitation list.

Alumni Outreach
We’re looking for ISD grads who are passionate about education for our newly formed Alumni Committee. Headed by Issaquah High School grad Jay Kipp (2001), our Alumni Committee seeks to create connections between past and current grads, become a resource for Alumni Reunion planners, and investigate how alumni can best support our current students—be it as a mentor, speaker, sage, or ...? Your input will help determine the path the committee takes. Curious? Contact Jay Kipp for more information.

Teachers and staff have applied for projects that reflect creativity and innovation in education and/or support school needs not currently covered by building or district budgets. Grants are awarded in two categories: Classroom Enrichment for projects that cost less than $1,000 and Kateri Brow Big Idea/Biggest Need for projects in the $1,000 - $10,000 range. ISF Benefits Issaquah High School
As we begin the new year, we want to help ‘spread the word’ about the ways Issaquah Schools Foundation has supported IHS.

From 2009-2011, ISF's investments in Issaquah High School include:
  • TEALS Program that brings talented Microsoft professionals to the classroom to teach Intro to and AP Computer Science and Web Design classes.

  • Bringing Shakespeare Alive with Seattle Shakespeare Company – Freshman language arts’ classrooms throughout the district will work with teaching artists from the Seattle Shakespeare Company to prepare students for Romeo and Juliet. $2,500/yr.

  • Modeling Instruction for Physics Teachers - Modeling instruction is a nationwide instructional model to improve high school Physics instruction and content knowledge - it is strongly supported by higher education institutions. $2,500/yr.

  • Spectrophotometers and SpectroVis to Study Emission Spectrum - The spectrophotometers with the optical fiber accessory, SpectroVis, give students the ability to measure wavelengths, concentrations of solutions, and emission spectrum with high resolution. (2008-2009 / $8,407)

  • Supporting Microbiological Investigations - This grant enables safe biological investigations to illustrate important first year and advanced biological concepts such as molecular engineering, evolution, genetics and cellular processes. (2008-2009 / $9,592)

  • Singing Machine - For purchase of a singing machine as a key component of the “Beginning Singing” elective. (2009-2010 / $575).

  • National Board Certification Scholarships that give teachers access to the ‘pinnacle’ of professional development programs; equipping them with the tools to develop inquisitive, engaged learners. Issaquah High currently has 11 National Board Certified teachers.

  • VOICE (Volunteers of Issaquah Changing Education) – a mentor/tutor program that pairs caring community volunteers with struggling students to improve academic performance, boost self-esteem, and help curb the high-school dropout rate. Six students are presently being served by six mentors at Issaquah High.

  • GLAD – a ‘best practices’ professional development program that helps teachers reach students of every learning style and helps them excel. Issaquah High has four GLAD teachers.

  • After-School Homework Labs that are staffed by certified teachers and offered FREE of charge to provide support for students in core subjects such as math, science, English, and foreign language. $5,000/yr.

  • PSAT – In collaboration with the District, the Foundation brings PSAT (Preliminary SAT) testing to sophomores and juniors at all high schools. This standardized test provides students with feedback on their college readiness, registers them for the National Merit Scholarship Competition, and connects them with colleges across the nation.

  • Curriculum Updates – ISF has partnered with the District to increase our students' global competence by funding new biology and chemistry curriculum and lab equipment. This year, because the Foundation worked with the PTSA’s to fund $438,000 of the K-5 Science Curriculum, the high school Literacy Curriculum was able to be adopted without delay.

  • Robotics Club – Students can gain real world applications in STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) through participation in the FIRST Robotics Competition.  $6,500/year.

  • Nurse’s Fund – Funds for all schools to provide necessary essentials for student learning such as eyeglasses, prescriptions, breakfast foods, etc. $5,000/yr
The Foundation needs your help to continue providing these programs—and more, to our students. Please consider donating to their All in for Kids Annual Fund campaign this fall.

We’re Here to Help
Could your child use extra homework help? Remind him/her to use the Foundation’s FREE After-School Homework Labs. Available at every middle and high school, the Labs offer teacher assisted tutoring for students of all levels. Some teachers even offer make-up classes and tests during this time. Check the Issaquah High School website for information on meeting days, times and subjects.

Become a VOICE Mentor
VOICE = Volunteers Of Issaquah Changing Education
What a difference an hour can make!

The District’s VOICE (Volunteers of Issaquah Changing Education) Mentor Program needs community volunteers to work one on one with students who would benefit from extra academic, social, and/or emotional support. The commitment is only one hour per week through the school year, and volunteers work in schools in partnership with staff. Volunteers regularly state that they form a strong bond and that their mentor time is meaningful and valued. (Hear one mentor’s powerful story.) If you are not available, please help recruit your neighbors, friends, relatives, or colleagues! VOICE is funded by the Issaquah Schools Foundation.
