Co-President’s Letter/Upcoming Meeting Date

The school year is just a month old, but IH PTSA has already been extremely busy! Volunteers helped with a number of school activities including New to IHS Night, Curriculum Night, Text Book Check Out, and Picture Day. In addition, volunteers helped organize all those forms students turned in at the beginning of the year (average of 4 forms each times 1900 students—you get the picture!) PTSA committees also hosted the Fall Staff Luncheon, updated school safety kits, and put together packets for newcomers to the school. Behind the scenes, volunteers revamped our website and spent time reviewing our financial documents. All in all, that represents more than 600 hours of time spent to help our school. Thanks to all of you for your hard work!

We’d like to thank all of you who attended the September meeting. We covered a lot of information and made a lot of decisions including the approval special funding requests for a 9th grade study skills program, and display items for the visual and performing arts departments. These grants will benefit large numbers of students both in the short term and for many years to come. We had a big turnout, but would love to see even more of you at our October 14th meeting. Once again, we’ll start at 9:00 with coffee and treats, and then start the meeting at 9:30 sharp.

In the meantime, we encourage you to learn more about Issaquah High PTSA by visiting our website at www.issaquahhighptsa.org.  You’ll find a treasure trove of information! And, if you have any questions or comments, please don’t hesitate to contact us at president@issaquahhighptsa.org.

Membership

Thank you to the 1200+ people who have already joined Issaquah High PTSA. If you haven’t yet signed up, we ask you do so before October 20th so we’ll be sure to print up enough school directories. Click here today to become a member and donate, and/or to register for volunteer opportunities, college prep classes and tests, and the senior celebration.

Reflections

The Reflections Art Program is a National PTA program. Students have the opportunity to create works of art for fun and recognition in any of the six areas: dance choreography, film/video, literature, musical composition, photography, and the visual arts (which include art forms such as drawing, painting, printmaking, and collage). The theme for the 2011-2012 school year is “Diversity Means”.  Entries submitted to our local PTSA are judged and selected pieces go on to District and National levels. The deadline for entries is November 7th.  Please pick up an entry form and rules in the office.  Any questions, please contact Wendy Logan or Kathleen Schneider, Reflections Chairs .  Complete details about the Reflections Program, each category and entry form can be found at the Washington State PTA Reflections webpage.

Fundraising

Each year, IH PTSA funds direct academic support through teacher and program grants.  Rather than running multiple fundraisers, PTSA seeks funding through donation dollars from families, employer matching funds, and corporate rebate programs (primarily eScrip).

Donation dollars have helped fund many materials and programs to support our students’ academic experience as well as their safety and welfare; see a full list HERE.  From textbooks to science materials to Mock Crash, your dollars make a difference.  Already this year, grant dollars have been designated for an after-school study skills program for a small group of 9th graders and mobile display boards and stands for the Performing Arts Department.

If you’ve already donated, thank you! If you haven’t, please consider making a generous donation to support our PTSA, teachers, and students.  Donations are tax-deductible and may be matched by your employer.  You can click HERE TO DONATE or fulfill your donation by check by bringing it to the school office or mailing it to:

IH PTSA, PO Box 2541, Issaquah, WA  98027.

Issaquah Schools Foundation (ISF)

Are you in
...to the All in for Kids Annual Fund Campaign? We know that state funding alone can’t provide the comprehensive education our kids deserve and the marketplace demands.  All in for Kids is our opportunity, as parents, to make sure our children have access to the resources they need to succeed.  Please give what you can at www.isfdn.org

Free Money
Our new Business Partners make it easy to direct dollars to our schools. The civic-minded local merchants below will donate a portion of their sales to the Foundation

They’re Here
The District’s Teaching and Learning department confirmed that materials from our brand spanking new Elementary Science arrived in classrooms at the end of September. Thanks to everyone who contributed to the GOT SCIENCE campaign last spring. You made it possible for our kids to benefit from all three domains (life, earth and physical) this fall.

Internship Time
Issaquah Schools Foundation and the Issaquah and Sammamish Chambers of Commerce are partnering to promote and publicize local internships.  A database of internship opportunities will be made available in the spring to ISD high school students and alumni. If you are a business that provides internships, please click here to take our three minutes survey.  A Foundation intern will follow up to answer specific questions and gather more information.

Senior Celebration

Congratulations to the 100 seniors who have already registered for Senior Celebration!!  If your student is not among them, please visit the PTSA website and register now!  Senior Celebration is an all night party following the graduation ceremony, June 2012. Know your Grad is safe, chaperoned, well fed and having a BLAST! This is an annual event sponsored by the IH PTSA and is the last chance for the Class of 2012 to celebrate together. Grad Night tickets will be on a first come, first served basis – order yours ASAP.

It takes many hands to create this amazing event. If you would like to volunteer for fundraising, publicity, registration or as a chaperone, please let us know at senior_celebration@issaquahhighptsa.org.  We will also be grateful for donations to our scholarship fund and/or prizes for the event.

SAT/ACT Preparedness

It's not too late to join one of the Fall SAT Prep Classes that began the week of September 26, 2011.  Math is offered on Mondays (2:45-4:45 PM for the early session and 5:00-7:00 PM for the late session) and is taught by Ms. Crain.  Verbal is offered on Thursdays (same time ranges as Math) and is taught by Ms. Dean and Ms. Jarvinen.

The classes run for 6 weeks so there are still plenty of class days left.  Students do not need to attend all days to benefit - each class is an opportunity to brush up on SAT test-taking skills. Even missing the first day the class is still a bargain - shop around and you will find that the best deal is conveniently located right here at IHS. The textbook used is The Official SAT Study Guide - 2nd Edition - from The College Board.

The cost for the Math class is $85. The cost for the Verbal class is $100.  It is $175 if you register for both classes.  Currently the early classes are near full, but the late classes have a very low student/teacher ratio. You can register online at the PTSA website.  Please contact Tina Weber if you have any questions.
