News from Washington State PTA:

February 2012 SCHOLARSHIPS AVAILABLE: The Washington State PTA is awarding scholarships to graduates of Washington State public high schools who are beginning their freshman year of post-secondary education in the United Sates. 
$2,000 Grants will be awarded to recipients entering four-year post-secondary institutions. $1,000 grants will be awarded to recipients entering community college, vocational-technical schools or other accredited institutions.
Scholarships are awarded on the basis of:
     1.  financial need
     2.  academic performance
     3.  leadership/community service  
Visit the Washington State PTA website for more information and the application form. This application form is the only form that will be accepted.  
Applications must be postmarked by March 1, 2012. Recipients will be notified by May 1, 2012.  
 
February 2012 Washington State PTA Resources: Maintaining Your Child’s Emotional Well-Being The January edition of Washington State PTA’s parenting magazine, The Child Advocate, is now available online. Be sure to check out this issue for some important tips about how to help your children maintain their emotional well-being while dealing with the stresses of the increasingly complex world in which they are growing up. 
 
June 2011 Implementation of Common Core State Standards Set to Begin
This fall, Washington’s public schools will begin the process of implementing the Common Core State Standards in mathematics and English language arts. What are these standards? Where did they come from? How do they compare with Washington’s existing standards?  There is much information about this topic. June 2011 Washington State PTA work continues: 
Although the school 2010-2011 school year is almost over, Washington State PTA’s (WSPTA) work continues and you can help. 
The many opportunities include:
•  Encouraging more men to get involved in PTA;
•  Evaluating different means of delivering training;
•  Serving on a statewide committee, such as the scholarship committee;
•  Exploring funding sources other than membership service fees; and many more.
If you’re interested in any of these or other opportunities to strengthen WSPTA, please fill out the Volunteer Interest Form and mail it to the WSPTA Office, 2003 65th Avenue W., Tacoma WA 98466, or fax it to 253-565-7753.
