(Career Center) at Issaquah High. All are welcome to attend! Principal
Paula Phelps will give a report and we will hear an update on the construction
progress. We will be celebrating
with an end of the year lunch at 11:00, following the meeting. Please join us!

Did you know that almost
150 Issaquah High School students took Mock SAT and ACT exams at school this
year sponsored by the Issaquah High PTSA? We also had over 100 students
enrolled for our SAT Readiness classes taught by Ms. Crain, Ms. Dean, and Ms.
Jarvinen in the Fall and Winter.
SAT Prep Programs for next
year will be similar with Mock exams and SAT prep classes.
For those who are
wondering - the Mock exams are a nice opportunity to take a practice exam and
get score results without it counting. The test score will be between you
and your student. This is not the same as the PSAT test that will be
offered in October at school. The PSAT exam is administered by
Collegeboard and is a helpful tool in preparation for the SAT and is also the
National Merit Scholarship exam for juniors. Differences with the mock
SAT and ACT exams are that they are full length and include essay sections just
like the real SAT and ACT, while the PSAT is shorter and does not include an
essay section.
Scheduled Mock Exams for
next year are: Mock SAT (Sept. 11, 2010 and Feb. 5, 2011) and Mock ACT
(January 29, 2011). We will offer the take home option again next year
for those students with conflicts with the scheduled test dates.
Scheduled SAT Readiness
courses will be in the Fall (starting the week of September 20, 2010) and
Winter (starting the week of January 31, 2011). Registration will be
online at www.issaquahhighptsa.org.
Look for registration to open in August. If these dates do not work for
your student, then summer is a great opportunity to take review courses from
outside companies such as Kaplan and Huntington (and there are many
others...).
A big thank you to Kaplan
Test Prep who has generously supported our students by providing test materials
and proctoring of these mock exams as a fundraiser for PTSA. Kaplan is
also offering Issaquah High School students a 10% discount if they sign up for
a comprehensive tutoring package and Kaplan will donate to the PTSA as
well. Kaplan also offers Classroom and Small Group /Tutoring and Issaquah
HS students will receive $100 off enrollment of these options. In
2009-2010 Kaplan donated $300 to the PTSA. There are many options for SAT prep out there, but if you
choose Kaplan, mention Issaquah High School and receive a discount.

Thank you to the nearly
800 parents, businesses, and PTSA members for contributing to the success of Nourish Every Mind 2010! Our 12th
Annual Benefit Luncheon, held on Thursday May 13, raised a record $406,000. The
generous support of our attendees will ensure that students across the District
have the resources to develop and achieve the promise of their academic
potential.
It was truly satisfying to
see the level of PTSA participation at the Luncheon. PTSAs were well
represented with tables from Beaver Lake, Briarwood, Cascade Ridge, Challenger,
Clark, Cougar Ridge, Endeavour, Grand Ridge, Issaquah Valley Elementary, Issaquah
Middle, Issaquah High, Liberty, Maple Hills, Maywood, Newcastle, Pine Lake,
Skyline, Sunset and Sunny Hills. What a terrific reminder of the power of the
ISF/PTSA partnership to make positive changes for our students and schools.
If you were unable to
attend Nourish Every Mind, please go to www.issaquahschoolsfoundation.org to view pictures, a time-lapse video of the
Issaquah Community Center transformation or to make a donation.
Why Pay a Tutor?
As we head into the final
weeks of school, remind your student to get any additional help they need to
ace end-of-year tests at the Foundation’s FREE After-School Homework Clubs and
Labs at middle and high schools. Both offer teacher assisted tutoring. Contact
your school for its After-School Homework Club/Lab schedule.
Packing Help Needed June 9-18
Here is the first volunteer opportunity for the
move to our new school. Bill Schadt, the librarian is looking for help to
inventory and pack the library on the following dates and times. He is
looking for 1-4 volunteers at a time. He welcomes students particularly
on June 14-17 when we only have partial days of school. This is a huge task
and any and all help is appreciated.
Please contact Lisa Gaan at lisagaan@comcast.net
if you can help.

TWO NEW POSITIONS ADDED TO ISSAQUAH HIGH PTSA BOARD
Great news-If you've thought about getting involved on the PTSA
board but haven't seen a position that suits your skill set, one of these newly
created chairs might just fit the bill! Contact Co-Presidents Lisa Gaan at lisagaan@comcast.net
or Karin Allen at kallen@allen-marketing.com if you are interested
or have suggestions of people we should contact.
Design Chair: With Phase I of
the IHS rebuild nearing completion, the PTSA is feeling the need to do some
rebuilding of our own! We are looking for a Design Chair who can help us revamp
our website and other communication vehicles. The new look has to be in place
by mid-August, so the bulk of the work would take place over the summer.
Publicity Chair: We are also adding
a new board position to let the world know all the great things the Issaquah
High PTSA does! This would involve activities such as writing articles,
interacting with the press, and helping keep our website information current;
but the possibilities are only limited to your imagination and time.
Issaquah High PTSA is
proud to announce that the following six graduating seniors have each been
awarded a $500 scholarship for use next year in continuing their education:
Jennifer Casserd
Caitlin Doxsie
Michael McManus
Michael Migotsky
Kathleen Moore
Jasmine Uysal
All six students
demonstrated high academic achievement while taking numerous challenging
courses, as well as a high degree of participation in extra-curricular
activities and community service.
PTSA received many worthy applications and it was challenging to limit
our winners to six. PTSA would
like to thank all of the students who took the time to apply for the
scholarships, and thank our members whose support each year makes programs such
as this one possible.
Spring Student Honors Breakfast
On April 29th, Principal Paula
Phelps honored 78 students at the Spring Student Honors Breakfast. The
students, along with their parents, enjoyed a continental breakfast buffet
supplied by the PTSA. The students were nominated by teachers or administrators
for going "above and beyond" the norm on campus.
Congratulations to all of the students for their outstanding
contributions to Issaquah High School.
Karen Starcevich
Congratulations to the recipients of the 2010
Issaquah High PTSA Outstanding Educator Award!
Jeff Berka
Vale Crain
Barbara Irish
Doug Jones
All were selected for providing our students with
outstanding educational opportunities both in and outside of the classroom;
each teacher being nominated based on a variety of different characteristics.
The awards were announced at the May 12th staff
meeting.
